I’m Skyler Kopit and I am running for Student Body at Large Senator. I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado but I now call Arizona my home. As a third-year pre-medical student at the University, I have gained a lot of valuable experience that has prepared me to take on this position. Through my various roles on campus I have learned to work with an array of diverse backgrounds in many different settings, as well as within ASUA. In my position of Social Media Chair in the Student Health Advocacy Committee, which is a program that is integrated with ASUA, I help provide an important avenue for students seeking to improve the health of the campus community. Just recently, we organized a 5k run to provide funds for those who would not otherwise be able to afford counseling. We nearly raised $1000 to donate to Counseling and Psych Services and it was amazing to see the community come together to support a wonderful cause. After this experience, I realized I didn’t want to stop here for the battle with funding and mental health. I strongly believe that our students should not have to pay for counseling and it should be funded by the school. Our students already pay for their tuition, housing, and other expenses to be able to create a future for themselves; they should not have to additionally pay for the mental stress that school may entail. In addition to improving the mental health of college students, I would also like to take the initiative to improve the safety of college students. I hope to do so by lengthening the hours of SafeRide on nights that it is most popular. This will ensure that each student returns home safely. Lastly, I hope to have a part in the library renovations by creating a room for textbook donations. Here, students could donate old textbooks so that other students could use them. The books would remain only in the room this way they are always there to access. I’m extremely excited to have a great year by accomplishing these goals.

In the last year I have had the privilege of serving as the Student Body Senator, where since my original inauguration date I have served on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees. Each working to advocate, support, and grow programs and initiatives to better the student experience, while promoting a successful and flourishing environment for wildcats, both academically and socially.
As a student of hispanic decent, a member of the LGBT community, and a peer that is self-supporting. I would like to continue my advocacy of our diverse student body. With immense focus on the following...
Civic Engagement: Voter Registration, Voting, 2020 Census, and Legislation.
Equity vs. Equality: Working with key administrative officials to tailor to each and every individual of our student population: academically, professionally, and financially.
Student Engagement: Working with key administration to address the decline of student participation in all that the University of Arizona has to offer. Addressing the decline in marketing strategies within student government, engaging freshman to pave way for leadership opportunity early on and more. In addition, working with campus partners to create outreach opportunities for prospective wildcats interest in student government, or the many organizations we offer on campus.
And much more as this position is consistently changing with the demands and actions of the student government, the University of Arizona, and the educational environment on the local, state, and federal level.

The two main platforms that I will be running on are diversity and inclusion, and transitional student support.
As an institution that strives towards diversity and inclusion, it is important that our student government abide by this objective as well. In ASUA, I will show constant support for all marginalized population, specifically our DACA and undocumented students. This includes creating fellowships and opportunities that any student regardless of their immigration status can benefit from, as well as holding a fundraiser for the President Directed Scholarship Fund. The second step towards upholding an inclusive campus is to invest in professional development for cultural centers and other students who would like to participate. It is also important that as ASUA, we are trained by the cultural centers themselves.
As a progressive campus, we need to create a safe space for all of our students and support them in their development as young adults. We need to expand existing programs, such as FirstCats grad prep initiative, that encourages students to thinkin about life after graduation. We need to invest in programs that demonstrate the graduate school application process and in depth information about funding for tests like LSAT, MCAT, GRE. These are small gestures that could alter a students future and empower them to continue their learning. In regards to transitional student support, as a transfer student from Pima, it is crucial to employ resources that expand our outreach efforts. We as ASUA and UA students should meet transfer students at their campus in order to connect them with resources, first-hand experience information we learn as students.

There are three major cornerstones to my campaign:
Student Safety:
Students should be able to feel safe at school. After a wave of sexual assaults and other violent attacks occurred last semester, many students have begun to feel unsafe on campus. This is not acceptable. As your Senator, I will work with campus and city police to identify and catch the people who commit crimes on campus. Additionally, I will work to improve systems such as the safe ride program and the blue light system. No student should have to fear for his or her safety while on campus. I will work my hardest to ensure that all students are safe from harm.
Free Speech:
I will advocate to maintain the university’s commitment to free speech. A major part of the college experience is meeting diverse people and being exposed to new viewpoints and ideas, however, many schools force discourse into “free speech zones.” This is not only unconstitutional, but also un-American. As Senator, I will ensure that free speech rights continue to be protected by the university administration.
Accessible and Efficient Facilities:
I will work my hardest to ensure all university facilities are as accessible and efficient as possible. Students pay a lot of money to attend the University of Arizona. As Senator, I pledge to always be accessible to students who wish to complain about or suggest improvements to university facilities. My job as Senator is to work to make the university as accommodating as possible to students. I will not forget or abandon this duty.
